The Primary Science Lab
Los Alamos, New Mexico
Commander Heisen walked into the building, stepping past several slain security guards on the floor. One of them was still moving, groaning, and holding his gut where he’d been shot. Heisen turned to look at one of the large Chinese soldiers, who was holding his assault weapon before his torso, splattered with other people’s blood, messy from the chaotic infiltration.
“Kāi’ēn,” he told the soldier, “Show mercy.”
A bullet to the security guard’s head ended his pain, and he slumped to his side.
Heisen looked through the large blast-proof glass doors separating the sublab, which they’d infiltrated, from the main lab, where several scientists were looking back at them.
Terrified.
The commander stopped at the clean room door and held a small device up to the digitally controlled lock. Several red lights glowed as they read from the RFID chip in the lock. They switched green, and the locks' internal servos whirred, unlocking the doors. He smiled and gently slid them open.
“Come,” Heisen pointed to the large soldier, “You join me.”
The soldier nodded and stepped forward, lowering the smoking muzzle of his weapon.
“Ohhhh, hold up,” Heisen continued, “This is a CLEAN room. You wait instead.”
The soldier did as instructed, and Heisen slowly walked into the lab, making eye contact with each of the scientists.
“You had some grand times on top,” Heisen said to the scientists. “Americans. Too bad, and so sad it ends. But all great things do this. Now, before the journey comes to a conclusion, we have much to discuss…”

-Excerpt from Some Thing Wild-
The Taos Mountains in New Mexico...
Professor Yan cried out, getting another boost of strength as he rose. He was suddenly blinded with pain as he felt the butt of a rifle smack his forehead. He didn’t lose consciousness, but he was seeing stars.
“Did you think it would work?”
Yan heard the familiar voice but couldn’t see where it came from.
“Taking data and trying to sell it to our enemies? That won’t happen.”
“No one sold anything!” Yan pleaded, “And it was MY data.”
He looked at the paramilitary group leader standing before him, intense light beams adding size to his silhouette. The man grabbed Yan by the collar, preventing him from fleeing.
“Information belongs to the people,” Major Cho pulled Yan closer to him, “And we are responsible for keeping it secure.”
“It was secure,” Yan replied, “YOU are going to misuse it.”
“Your plan would never work,” Major Cho growled, “Too many elements against you.”
Yan was shivering, and Major Cho grabbed a heating pack from his coat pocket and broke the glass rod inside, agitating the activation particles. He handed the pack to Yan. The professor hesitated, then finally grabbed the warm packet with a shivering hand, quickly shoving it into his jacket.
“This information,” Yan began, forcing himself to speak through chattering teeth, “This information is intended to help people. Not fuel your war machine!”
“That’s not a conclusion you can arrive,” Cho said.
He began lifting Yan to his feet as they all heard an ominous sound from the other side of the woods. It was subtle at first and slowly grew into a terrible growl.
The team members looked toward the woods, searching for the source.
“What?” Cho began.
The growl grew louder until it finally erupted into a deadly sound…
